As we begin to look at the list of Beatitudes in Luke’s Gospel, we need to keep two things in mind – first, the audience, and second, the differences with the Beatitudes in Matthew’s Gospel. In Matthew, Jesus is talking to a great crowd, while here, in Luke, Jesus is talking to the disciples. Also in Matthew, we see a “spiritualizing” of the sayings.
